As soon as the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns began, it was clear there would be a desperate need on the Northern Beaches for community support in various capacities. Knowing that job loss was inevitable for some and the ability to afford and gain access to staple groceries and a balanced meal would become a challenge, Pittwater RSL partnered with The Link Community Care group to create the ‘CAREHAMPER’ program.
Pittwater was recognised for its community support with the CAREHAMPER program, being named finalists in the ClubsNSW Clubs and Community awards in 2021.
The program provided- and continues to provide - local people with staple groceries, bread and a cooked meal professionally prepared by Pittwater RSL chefs. The ‘CAREHAMPER’ has a value of over $60 and is made available for a $10 service and handling fee (or free to those who cannot afford the hamper). Free delivery is available for those unable to leave their home.
Pittwater RSL CEO Jason Manning and the senior executive team already had a relationship with The Link Community Care group through financial assistance for previous community programs. The Link Community Care group have a consistent and strong history of helping and serving those on the Northern Beaches in most need. So, when the March lockdowns were put in place, Pittwater CEO contacted The Link Pastor Glenn Wysman to see how they could best serve the community and those in need moving forward. It was immediately clear the highest need would be for those experiencing job loss and unable to afford everyday essentials.
The roll out of the ‘CAREHAMPER’ program kicked off on April 22, 2020. An incredible effort from everyone involved!
The support that Pittwater RSL provided for the program was three-fold. One, in the form of a monetary seed donation of $20,000. Also, in providing the chefs, kitchen and cooked meals for each of the CAREHAMPER packages, to date at an in-kind cost of $24,000. Finally, by volunteering the club premises as the COVID-safe distribution/pickup centre for the meals between April 22 and June 1, 2020.
During the height of the lockdowns, the program was serving between 150-300 meals per day, 5 days per week. As restrictions eased, that number dropped to 200 meals a week, distributed 2 days per week and continues in this capacity.
During the Sydney lockdown of July 2021 Pittwater and Link Community Care reactivated the program with daily meals prepared by our chefs, made available to those in most need in our community.
